Tamil wedding video editing, from the nichayathartham to the nalangu
Many Tamil Hindu weddings build toward one fixed moment: the muhurtham, the auspicious time when the groom ties the thali around the bride's neck while the nadaswaram and thavil break into the getti melam. Around it sit the nichayathartham, often weeks before, a reception that many families hold the evening before the wedding, and the playful nalangu games. With WeddingEditor you upload one event or the whole wedding as a project, name the people and rituals that matter, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.
Tamil weddings may be Hindu, Christian or Muslim, and this page follows the common Hindu shape of the day. Practice varies by family, community and region, so the brief you write matters more than any guide.

How to get a Tamil wedding edited
- 1
Upload the events you covered
A Tamil wedding often means a pre-dawn start at a kalyana mandapam, a stage crowded with relatives and priests, and a reception on a different day from the ceremony. Make one project for the whole wedding, or one for each event you want as its own film, such as the nalangu. Put every camera's files in the project as they came off the cards. Nothing needs renaming or sorting, there is no cap on how many files you add, and a single file may be as large as 5 GB.
- 2
Write the brief only you can give
WeddingEditor was not in the mandapam and has never met the family. Use the preference questions to name the bride's parents, the groom's sister if she helps with the thali, the maternal uncles who lift the couple during the maalai maatral, and the rituals in the order they happened. Say how much of the nadaswaram and the chanting you want to hear, and list anything to leave out. Each question is optional, and skipped ones are not filled in with guesses.
- 3
Check out, watch and ask for changes
Buy One Wedding or spend a plan credit, then start processing, which typically takes 24 to 72 hours. The film then lands in your project, where you can watch it and download a 1080p widescreen MP4. If something needs changing, email your notes from the link in the app; up to two revision rounds come with every full edit.
Preference notes videographers write for a Tamil wedding
Concrete notes about people, clothing and order help the edit find the right moments in hours of mandapam footage.
People to feature
"Bride: deep red Kanjeevaram silk for the muhurtham, draped nine-yard style. Groom: silk veshti with a gold border and angavastram. Feature the bride's paati in the green saree with the walking stick, and the groom's elder sister in yellow, who stands behind the bride at the thali."
The muhurtham
"Must include: the thali being tied during the getti melam, the akshathai rice falling on the couple, the groom slipping the metti onto the bride's toes, and some of the seven steps around the fire."
Kashi yatra and maalai maatral
"Keep the groom setting off on the Kashi yatra with his umbrella and the bride's father coaxing him back. At the maalai maatral both uncles lift the couple three times; show a lift from each side."
How to use the sound
"Balanced speech and music. Let the getti melam play loud at the thali moment. The vadhyar's chanting can sit in the background elsewhere, but keep the bride's father thanking the guests at the reception."
The oonjal
"At the oonjal the aunts sing while the couple sits on the swing and colored rice balls are circled around them. Keep one verse of the song and the milk and banana being fed to the couple."
Things to leave out
"Leave out the queue at the banana-leaf lunch and any clips where the homam smoke hides the couple's faces. The groom's cousin in the grey shirt asked not to be filmed."
What Tamil wedding footage usually includes
An early, fixed muhurtham
The ceremony is timed to a muhurtham that families commonly fix with an astrologer from the couple's horoscopes, and it is often early in the morning. Coverage may start before dawn, and when the reception is held the evening before, one wedding becomes two days of footage.
A crowded stage and a sacred fire
Many rituals happen on the decorated stage of a kalyana mandapam, with the priests, the homam fire, both sets of parents and a ring of relatives pressed close around the couple. Expect smoke, mixed stage lighting and guests leaning in with phones.
Live instruments and chanting
The nadaswaram and thavil play through much of the morning, the getti melam rises to cover everything at the thali, the priests chant throughout, and women often sing at the oonjal and the nalangu. Almost all of it is live, so it is already in your camera audio.
Rituals that differ by community
Iyer and Iyengar weddings commonly include the Kashi yatra, the oonjal and the bride seated on her father's lap for the kanyadanam, while many other Tamil Hindu families follow their own customs, with elders leading some rites. Tamil Christian and Muslim weddings have different ceremonies altogether, so ask the family for their order of the day.
One project, one deliverable
Every project yields one edit, either a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser. A wedding with a reception the night before can be one project or two, and each project uses one purchase or one plan credit.
The nadaswaram stays, music supports it
WeddingEditor keeps the sound from your cameras and uses music alongside it, balanced by your audio preference. If the couple asks for one particular film song, lay it in yourself, licensed, after download in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro.
Tamil wedding events and what to write in the preferences
| Event | What to film or flag | A preference note for it |
|---|---|---|
| Nichayathartham | Trays of betel leaves, fruit and flowers exchanged between the families, the wedding date read out, the bride in a saree from the groom's family | "Include the date being read aloud and both fathers exchanging the trays." |
| Reception (the evening before, in many families) | The couple on stage in evening clothes, guests queuing to greet them, live music or a band | "Feature the grandparents' greeting and the college friends' group photo." |
| Kashi yatra | The groom's mock departure with umbrella, fan and walking stick, and the bride's father persuading him to stay | "Keep the umbrella opening and the father's plea." |
| Maalai maatral and oonjal | Garlands exchanged with the couple raised on uncles' shoulders, then the swing, the songs and the rice balls | "Show the third garland lift and a verse of the oonjal song." |
| Muhurtham | The kanyadanam, the thali tied as the getti melam plays, rice showered by the guests | "Put the thali moment at the heart of the film, uncut." |
| Saptapadi and metti | Seven steps near the fire, the toe rings, in many families the bride's foot placed on a grinding stone | "Show the metti and at least two of the steps." |
| Nalangu | Games between the couple, such as rolling a coconut, breaking appalam and hunting for a ring in a pot of water | "Mostly fun here; keep the laughter at the ring hunt." |
What is a Tamil wedding video edit?
A Tamil wedding video edit turns the footage of one or more Tamil wedding events into a short film the couple can watch and share. With WeddingEditor it is a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser, cut from the files you upload and made by WeddingEditor's AI editing according to the people and rituals you name.
Tamil names a language and a people, in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and a wide diaspora, not a religion. A Tamil wedding may be Hindu, Christian or Muslim, and a Sri Lankan Tamil wedding can differ from one in Chennai or Madurai. The South Indian guide covers the wider region.
Tamil wedding editing questions
Can the reception from the night before be its own project?
Yes. Create a separate project for the reception and upload only that evening's files. It gets its own Highlight Reel or Social Teaser, and the muhurtham morning can go into a second project, each with its own purchase or plan credit.
Can WeddingEditor put a chosen Tamil film song on the wedding video?
Not a song you choose. The edit uses the sound in your footage, such as the nadaswaram, the chanting and the reception band, with music in support as the audio preference sets. If the couple wants a favorite song, add it yourself, licensed, once you have downloaded the MP4.
How will WeddingEditor know which relative helps tie the thali?
Only from your notes. In the question about specific people, describe her by relationship and clothing, for example "groom's elder sister, yellow silk saree, stands behind the bride and ties the last two knots". Without that, the edit has no way of telling her from the other aunts on stage.
Does WeddingEditor decide which rituals belong in a Tamil wedding film?
No. WeddingEditor edits the footage you upload and follows what you write. Which rites matter, what the family considers private and how the priests' part should be shown are decisions for the couple and you, so spell them out in the preference questions.
Will the edit be back before the couple's next function?
Possibly, but do not plan around it. Processing typically takes 24 to 72 hours from the moment you start it, and there is no guaranteed turnaround, so anything that must play at a later event in the same week is safer cut yourself.
Can my second shooter at the bride's house add their files?
Yes, if they are signed in to your WeddingEditor team. WeddingEditor can set up a team upload link for teammates, so footage from the bride's home and the groom's arrival ends up in the same project.
What does a Tamil wedding edit cost?
For a single Tamil wedding project, the price is $119 one-time for one wedding, or a plan credit if you subscribe. Either way the edit comes with up to two rounds of revisions, requested by email.
