SRI LANKAN WEDDINGS

Sri Lankan wedding video editing, from the poruwa to the homecoming

Sri Lankan weddings differ by community. Many Sinhala Buddhist couples marry on a poruwa, a decorated wooden platform, at moments set by an astrologer's nakath, welcomed by Kandyan drummers and dancers; many Tamil Hindu couples marry at a muhurtham with the tying of the thaali to nadaswaram and drums; Christian couples often marry in church, and Muslim couples with a nikah. Many couples then hold a homecoming hosted by the groom's family a few days later. With WeddingEditor you upload the wedding or a single event as a project, say which tradition it followed and who matters, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

The drums, the chanting and the baila band stay as you recorded them. Music joins them as your audio preference sets.

How to get a Sri Lankan wedding edited

  1. 1

Upload the wedding, the homecoming or both

A Sri Lankan wedding often means a wedding day with a ceremony and reception in the same hotel hall, then a homecoming on another day. Put both in one project for a single film, or give the poruwa or the homecoming a project of its own. Upload every camera's files without sorting them, up to 5 GB each, with no limit on how many.

  2. 2

Name the tradition and the people

Say whether the ceremony was a poruwa, a Hindu ceremony, a church wedding or a nikah, and list its moments in order. Name the parents, the relative who poured the water or tied the thaali, the girls who sang, and anyone the family asked you not to feature. Every question is optional, and skipped ones are left blank, not guessed.

  3. 3

    Receive, review and revise

Pay for One Wedding or use a credit, start processing, and the film typically arrives 24 to 72 hours later. The finished edit is delivered to your project. Watch it, download the widescreen 1080p MP4, and email notes from the app for up to two revision rounds.

Preference notes for a Sri Lankan wedding

Notes like these give the edit something definite to look for in a family it never met.

People on the poruwa

"Bride in a white Kandyan osariya with layered gold necklaces; groom in Kandyan dress with the four-cornered hat. Feature the bride's uncle, grey suit, who poured the water over their tied fingers."

The nakath

"The couple stepped onto the poruwa at the nakath, 10:24. Please keep the moment they step up and the drummers stopping right after."

The welcome

"Fun & energetic at the start. Keep the Kandyan dancers and drummers leading the couple into the hall, and the oil lamp being lit by both mothers."

A Tamil Hindu ceremony

"Ceremony at the temple hall. Must include the thaali tying with the nadaswaram and drums loud, the couple circling the fire, and the elders blessing them with rice."

Speeches and voices

"Keep the Jayamangala Gatha sung by the girls in white, and the groom's father's toast in Sinhala. The MC's announcements can go."

Leave out

"Avoid the cake table queue and the band setting up. The bride's cousin in the blue saree asked not to be filmed."

What Sri Lankan wedding footage usually holds

A general picture only. Customs vary between Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher families, between faiths, regions and families.

Four traditions, one island

Sri Lankan weddings include Sinhala Buddhist, Tamil Hindu, Christian (both Sinhala and Tamil) and Muslim weddings, each with its own rites. Mixed weddings are not unusual, and some couples hold two ceremonies.

Nakath and the poruwa

Many Sinhala families have an astrologer set auspicious times, the nakath, for key moments such as stepping onto the poruwa. On the poruwa the couple's little fingers are commonly tied with a thread and water is poured over them, while verses such as the ashtaka are recited and girls sing the Jayamangala Gatha.

Drums, dancers and the oil lamp

Kandyan drummers and dancers often lead the couple in, and lighting a traditional brass oil lamp is a common opening to the occasion. Kandyan bridal dress, with an osariya saree and many layered necklaces, is a frequent choice for Sinhala brides.

Hotel halls and a long day

Many weddings take place in hotel ballrooms, with the ceremony and the reception in the same hall. Indoor light, a stage and a dance floor are common, as is a band playing baila and pop for dancing later in the day.

Going away and homecoming

Many couples change into going-away outfits and leave the wedding together, then attend a homecoming, hosted by the groom's family, a few days later. Some families combine or skip these, so ask what is planned.

One edit per project

Each project ends in one edit, a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser. A separate homecoming film is its own project, with its own purchase or plan credit.

What is a Sri Lankan wedding video edit?

A Sri Lankan wedding video edit is a short film of a wedding, or one of its events, from any of the island's traditions: a Sinhala poruwa, a Tamil Hindu ceremony, a church wedding or a nikah. With WeddingEditor it is a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser, made from the footage you upload and made by WeddingEditor's AI editing, following the moments and people you describe.

Sri Lankan is a nationality, not a single rite. A Sri Lankan Tamil wedding shares much with Tamil weddings in India, and a Sinhala poruwa ceremony is a different thing from a Buddhist religious service.

Sri Lankan wedding editing questions

Can the poruwa ceremony be the center of the film?

Yes, if your brief says so. List the poruwa moments in order in the moments question, name who tied the fingers and who poured the water, and choose "Ceremony & vows" among the priorities.

Can the homecoming get its own film?

Yes. Create a separate project for the homecoming and upload only its footage. It returns its own Highlight Reel or Social Teaser, apart from the wedding project.

Will the Kandyan drums be in the edit?

Yes, if your cameras recorded them. The edit keeps the recorded sound, so the drums, the chanting and the band are heard, with music in support as your audio preference sets. Say in the audio question how prominent they should be.

Can I choose a Sinhala or Tamil song for the film?

Not through WeddingEditor, whose music follows your audio preference. If the couple want a particular song, add licensed music yourself in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro after you download.

The couple had a poruwa and a church wedding. Can both be in one highlight?

Yes, by uploading both to one project and listing each ceremony's moments in the order they happened. If the families want a film of each, use two projects.

Can my second shooter upload from the groom's side?

Yes, if they are signed in to your WeddingEditor team. WeddingEditor sets up a team upload link so their files go into the same project.

What does one Sri Lankan wedding edit cost?

One Wedding is $119 one-time for one wedding, or one plan credit per project. Up to two revision rounds by email come with every full edit.
