PAKISTANI WEDDINGS

A dholki highlight, from a living room full of songs

A dholki is an informal gathering, usually at the bride's family home, held on one or many evenings in the weeks before a Pakistani wedding. Women of the family and friends sit around the dholak, a two-headed barrel drum, often keeping time by striking it with a spoon, and sing traditional wedding songs, tappay and teasing verses, with clapping and spontaneous dancing. Upload the dholki as its own project, name the singers and the people at its heart, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

How to get a highlight of the dholki

  1. 1

    Upload one night or several

Create a project for the dholki and add the footage from the evenings you filmed. If there were several nights, decide whether they make one film; each project produces one edit.

  2. 2

Name the singers and the song moments

In the preferences, name the women leading the songs and the drummer, describe the bride's outfit, and list moments to keep, such as a teasing song aimed at the groom's family or the bride being pulled up to dance. Indoor light is often low, so point the edit to the clearest clips.

  3. 3

    Receive and refine

Pay with One Wedding or a credit, then start processing; it typically takes 24 to 72 hours. The edit is made by WeddingEditor's AI editing and arrives in your project as a 1080p MP4. Up to two email revision rounds are included.

Moments of the dholki to list

The drum and the spoon

The woman on the dholak and the friend tapping a spoon on its body to keep the beat.

The song leader

An aunt or grandmother leading verses, with everyone answering.

Teasing songs

Songs that tease the groom's family, often the funniest moments of the night.

The bride pulled up

Cousins pulling the bride up to dance in the middle of the circle.

Clapping circles

Women clapping in rhythm, sometimes with dances in pairs.

Late-night laughter

The night winding down, tea and snacks, the bride with her closest friends.

What happens at a dholki, in order

Dholkis are informal, so the order is loose. These are the common elements.

1. Gathering at home

Relatives and friends gather in the evening at the bride's home, or sometimes the groom's, often sitting on the floor or on cushions.

2. The dholak and the songs

Someone plays the dholak and the women sing traditional wedding songs, tappay and mahiye, with call-and-response verses.

3. Dancing and teasing

As the night goes on, people get up to dance and sing songs that tease the other family.

4. Many nights

Some families hold a dholki every evening for the week or more before the wedding, each a little different.

Upload without sorting

You can upload the clips straight off your cards; renaming and pre-selecting are not needed.

The sound you captured

The singing and the drum stay as recorded, and your audio preference sets how music sits with them.

What is a dholki?

A dholki is an informal pre-wedding gathering in Pakistani and North Indian Muslim families, named after the dholak drum, where women sing traditional wedding songs and dance in the nights leading up to the wedding.

It is not the mehndi, which is a larger, more formal event with the henna rasm, and not the mayun. Some families fold the last dholki into the mehndi night; say where one ends.

Dholki highlight questions

We filmed three dholki nights. Can they be one highlight?

Yes. Upload all three into one project and list each night's key moments. If each night should have its own film, use separate projects, each with its own purchase or credit.

The room was dark. Can the AI editing still use it?

The AI editing can only use what you filmed. Name the clips where faces are clearest and the edit will rely on those.

Will the songs be in the film?

Yes, if a camera captured them. The edit uses the sound inside your video files. WeddingEditor keeps your original sound and uses music alongside it, balanced by your audio preference.

Some guests did not want to be filmed. Can the AI editing avoid them?

Yes. Describe them in the question about anything to avoid and the AI editing leaves them out.

Where does the dholki film go when it is done?

Into your project, to watch and download. WeddingEditor does not send it to the family; you do.

Does WeddingEditor decide whether the women's singing may be shared?

No. Some families keep the dholki among women, so whether it appears is their decision. For this Pakistani dholki film, WeddingEditor edits only the clips you upload and follows your avoid notes.
