BENGALI WEDDINGS

A gaye holud highlight, turmeric, tattwa and all

In a Hindu Bengali wedding the gaye holud usually happens on the morning of the wedding day. Turmeric paste is applied to the groom first at his home, and some of that turmeric is then sent to the bride's home, along with tattwa, decorated gifts of clothes, sweets and often a fish, before it is applied to her. Women of the family sing, laugh and smear turmeric on each other. Upload the gaye holud footage as its own WeddingEditor project, name who applies the turmeric and which gifts to show, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a highlight. If the family held the bride's and groom's gaye holud as one shared event instead, simply describe it that way in your notes; the AI editing follows the order you write.

Gaye holud moments to list

The groom's turmeric

His mother or aunts applying the paste at his home.

The tattwa arriving

Trays carried in from the groom's home: a sari, cosmetics, sweets and often a fish dressed as a bride.

The bride's turn

Her aunts and cousins applying the turmeric sent from the groom's side.

Songs and ulu

Women singing and ululating around her.

The mess

Everyone smeared in yellow, laughing.

The bath

A ritual bath afterwards, if the family allows filming.

What happens at a gaye holud, in order

Families differ. Some hold it for the bride and groom on the same morning, others the day before.

1. The groom first

In many families turmeric is applied to the groom first, at his home.

2. Turmeric sent to the bride

Some of the same turmeric is sent to the bride's home, which links the two families.

3. Tattwa

Gift trays (tattwa) go with it, beautifully decorated; a whole fish dressed in a sari is a well-known Bengali touch.

4. The bride's gaye holud

Married women of the family apply turmeric to the bride, with songs, ulu and blowing of the shankh.

A highlight or a teaser of the morning

The project yields one edit, a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

The singing kept as recorded

The edit keeps the songs and ulu from your footage, with music alongside as your audio preference sets.

What is a gaye holud?

Gaye holud, meaning turmeric on the body, is a Bengali pre-wedding ritual in which turmeric paste is applied to the groom and then the bride to bless and beautify them before the wedding.

A Bangladeshi gaye holud, common in Muslim Bangladeshi weddings, is often a large separate evening event with its own customs. The Bangladeshi pages cover it.

Gaye holud highlight questions

Can the highlight include both the groom's and the bride's gaye holud?

Yes, if both are uploaded to one project. Say the order you want.

Will WeddingEditor know what tattwa is?

Describe it in your notes, for example "the decorated gift trays, including the fish in a sari".

Can the ritual bath be left out?

Yes. Put it in the avoid question if the family does not want it shown.

The color of the turmeric looks off on one camera. What can I do?

WeddingEditor works toward one consistent finished look. Point the edit to the camera with the best color and light.

Can the tattwa trays be the opening shot?

Yes. Name the tray you want first, for example the fish in the sari, in the moments question.

Can my second shooter's files from the groom's home be added?

Yes, if they are signed in to your WeddingEditor team; WeddingEditor can set up a team upload link for them.
