# A muhurtham highlight, from the kanyadanam to the seven steps

In a Tamil Hindu wedding, the muhurtham is the auspicious time chosen for the marriage itself, and people often use the word for the whole morning of rites around it. Its peak is the mangalya dharanam: the groom ties the thali around the bride's neck while the nadaswaram and thavil play the getti melam and guests shower the couple with akshathai. To get a highlight of that morning, upload its footage as its own WeddingEditor project, list the rites and people in the preference questions, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

The order and the rites differ between Iyer, Iyengar and other Tamil families. Check the sequence with the family or the priest before the day.

## How to get a highlight of the muhurtham

1. **Upload the muhurtham morning** Create a project for the muhurtham and add the files you shot on the mandapam stage and around it: the groom's arrival, the Kashi yatra if there was one, the garlands and the swing, the kanyadanam, the thali, the seven steps and the blessings. Add every camera's files without sorting them first. Each file can be up to 5 GB, and the project has no limit on file count.
2. **List the rites in the order they happened** In the moments question, write the rites as this family performed them, and put the thali first in importance. Name the relatives with a role, such as the father who gives the bride's hand and the groom's sister who may help with the knots, and use the audio question to say how much of the chanting and the instruments should come through.
3. **Get the edit back and refine it** Apply One Wedding or a plan credit to begin; the muhurtham highlight typically takes 24 to 72 hours. The highlight is then delivered to your project. Watch it there, download the 1080p MP4, and email up to two rounds of revision notes from the app.

## Moments of the muhurtham to list

Put these in the must-include question, in order, and leave out any the family did not perform.

- **The Kashi yatra**: In many Brahmin weddings, the groom sets off with an umbrella, a fan and a walking stick as if leaving for a life of study, and the bride's father persuades him to marry instead.
- **Maalai maatral**: The couple exchange garlands three times, each carried on the shoulders of an uncle or cousin who tries to lift them out of reach.
- **The oonjal**: The couple seated on a swing while married women sing, feed them milk and banana, and circle colored rice balls around them to ward off the evil eye.
- **Kanyadanam**: The bride's parents formally giving her hand to the groom; in many Iyer weddings she sits on her father's lap, holding a coconut.
- **The thali and akshathai**: The groom ties the thali, commonly with three knots, often with his sister completing the last two, as the getti melam drowns out every other sound and rice rains down.
- **Saptapadi**: The couple taking seven steps together near the sacred fire, the groom placing the bride's foot on a grinding stone and slipping toe rings onto her feet in many families.

## What happens at the muhurtham, in order

This is the shape many Tamil Brahmin weddings follow. Other families skip, reorder or rename some of these rites.

- **1. Before the auspicious time**: Early in the morning, the groom's side is welcomed to the mandapam, and in many weddings the Kashi yatra, the maalai maatral and the oonjal follow, so the families are gathered and the mood is light before the main rites.
- **2. Kanyadanam**: The bride, commonly in a nine-yard silk saree for this rite in many Brahmin families, is given in marriage by her parents. The priests chant and the homam fire is lit on the stage.
- **3. Mangalya dharanam at the muhurtham**: At the chosen time the groom ties the thali, a sacred pendant on a yellow thread or gold chain. The nadaswaram and thavil break into the getti melam, a burst of drums meant to drown out any inauspicious sound, and guests throw akshathai.
- **4. Saptapadi and blessings**: The couple take seven steps together near the fire, the bride receives her metti, and in many families she is shown the Arundhati star as a symbol of fidelity. Elders then bless the couple, and a banana-leaf meal often follows.
- **A highlight of the morning**: The muhurtham morning can run for several hours. WeddingEditor makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser from it; it does not produce the complete rites end to end, which you can cut yourself.
- **The getti melam as recorded**: WeddingEditor keeps your camera audio and sets music beside it by your audio preference, so the instruments and the priests' chanting are heard as your microphones caught them, loud stage acoustics included.

## Parts of the muhurtham and what to write in the preferences

| Part of the morning | What it looks or sounds like | What to note in the preferences |
|---|---|---|
| Kashi yatra | The groom with umbrella and walking stick, laughter, the bride's father pleading | "Short and playful; keep the umbrella opening." |
| Maalai maatral | Garlands, couples on shoulders, cheering from both sides | "Show the highest lift and both families laughing." |
| Oonjal | A swing, women singing, rice balls circled | "Keep one verse of the oonjal song." |
| Kanyadanam | The bride on her father's lap, chanting, the fire | "Her father is in the cream veshti; keep his face." |
| Thali | Three knots, getti melam, rice in the air | "The center of the film, uncut and loud." |
| Saptapadi | Seven steps near the fire, toe rings, the grinding stone | "Two steps and the metti, then the blessings." |

## What is the muhurtham?

Muhurtham means an auspicious time, chosen for the wedding from the couple's horoscopes, and in everyday use it names the wedding ceremony itself. Its central rite is the tying of the thali. A muhurtham highlight is a short edit of that morning, keeping the rites in order, made from the footage you upload.

Not the same as: It is not the nichayathartham, the betrothal held before the wedding, or the nalangu, the games that often follow. It shares the saptapadi with weddings across India, but the thali tied to the getti melam is what Tamil families most often look for.

## Muhurtham video questions

### The muhurtham was before sunrise. Will the highlight handle the low light?

The edit works with the footage you recorded, so the clearest clips make the cut. You can say which camera handled the stage light best, and ask in the avoid question for dark or grainy shots to be used sparingly.

### Can the highlight show all three knots of the thali?

If you filmed them, yes. List "all three knots, including the groom's sister" in the moments question so the edit does not trim it to the first knot only.

### Does WeddingEditor decide which rites are too sacred to show?

No. WeddingEditor follows your notes and does not judge religious protocol. Agree with the family and the priest what may be shown, film within that, and use the avoid question for anything that should not appear.

### Can I make the muhurtham one project and the reception another?

Yes. Each project gives one edit, so the muhurtham can have its own highlight and the reception its own, each with a purchase or plan credit.

### Will the priests' chanting be cut short?

The highlight is about 5 minutes, so long chanting is shortened, but you can ask for a stretch of it to play clearly, for example under the kanyadanam, in the audio and moments questions.

### How do I pay for a muhurtham highlight?

Use One Wedding, $119 one-time for one wedding, or one plan credit. Processing starts once payment is done, and up to two email revision rounds are included.
