# South Indian wedding video editing, region by region

South Indian is an umbrella, not one tradition. Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Kerala weddings, Hindu, Christian and Muslim, share some threads, such as an auspicious muhurtham chosen in advance, the tying of a thaali or mangalsutra as the central moment for Hindu couples, live nadaswaram and drums, silk and jasmine, and a meal often served on banana leaves, but their rituals, names and pace differ a great deal. Whichever you filmed, upload it as a WeddingEditor project, say which tradition it is and which moments matter, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

This page explains what the southern traditions share and where they part. Each regional page goes into its own rituals.

## How to get a South Indian wedding edited

1. **Start from the tradition you filmed** Before you upload, find out from the couple which regional and religious tradition the wedding followed, or which mix, since many South Indian couples marry across communities and combine customs. Then create one project for the whole wedding, or one per event, and add every camera's files as they came off the cards.
2. **Name the tradition in your brief** WeddingEditor follows what you write, so start the moments answer with the tradition, for example "Tamil Iyer wedding" or "Syrian Christian wedding in Kerala", then list the rituals in order with their names and a plain description, and the people in each. Choose how much of the mantras, hymns or nadaswaram should be heard.
3. **Process, receive and revise** After buying One Wedding or using a plan credit, start processing; it typically takes 24 to 72 hours, with no promised date. The finished edit is delivered to your project, where you can watch it and download a 1080p MP4. You have up to two rounds of email revisions.

## Preference notes for a South Indian wedding

Name the tradition first, then describe rituals plainly. These are examples from different southern weddings.

- **A mixed wedding**: "Tamil groom, Telugu bride. They kept the Tamil oonjal and malai maatral and the Telugu talambralu. Please include all three and label nothing; just keep them in the order they happened."
- **A short Kerala Hindu ceremony**: "The thali was tied at the temple within a short muhurtham window and filming was limited. Use the hall footage of the garlands and the sadya generously."
- **A church wedding**: "Kerala Christian wedding: please include the minnu being tied and the manthrakodi being placed over the bride's head, then the walk out of the church."
- **The central moment**: "For the thaali, please show the knots, both mothers' faces and the guests throwing rice. Nadaswaram and drums loud here."
- **The meal**: "A few shots of the banana leaf meal with the grandparents eating together; no more than that."
- **Leave out**: "Skip the gift table and the parking area. The bride's cousin in the maroon shirt asked not to appear."

## What South Indian weddings commonly share, and where they differ

General patterns only. Each family, region, community and faith does things its own way.

- **Shared: the muhurtham and the thaali**: Most Hindu weddings across the south are planned around a muhurtham chosen from the couple's horoscopes, and the central act is the groom tying the thaali or mangalsutra while drums and nadaswaram swell and guests shower rice. Tamil and Kannada muhurthams are commonly in the morning; Telugu ones may fall at any hour, including late at night.
- **Shared: dress, flowers and food**: Silk sarees, temple style gold jewelry and jasmine in the bride's hair are common across the region, and the wedding meal is often served on banana leaves, called the sadya in Kerala.
- **Different: signature rituals**: Telugu weddings have jeelakarra bellam and talambralu, Tamil weddings the oonjal swing and malai maatral garland exchange, Kannada weddings the dhaare, and Kerala Hindu weddings a brief thali tying, often at a temple, followed by the sadya. The kasi yatra, a groom's mock departure, appears in many Telugu, Tamil and Kannada families.
- **Different: faith**: Kerala in particular has large Christian and Muslim communities. Syrian Christian weddings take place in church, with the minnu, a small pendant, and the manthrakodi, a saree the groom gives the bride; Muslim weddings center on the nikah. Tamil, Telugu and Kannada Christian and Muslim weddings differ again.
- **One project per edit**: Whatever the tradition, each project gives one edit: a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser, using one purchase or one plan credit.
- **Recorded sound, music in support**: Mantras, hymns, nadaswaram and chenda stay as your cameras caught them, with music beside them as your audio preference sets. Lay in a particular licensed song yourself in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro if the couple wants one.

## Southern traditions at a glance, and what to write in the preferences

| Tradition | Commonly distinctive moments | A note for the preferences |
|---|---|---|
| Telugu Hindu | Bride carried in a basket by her uncles, jeelakarra bellam behind a cloth, talambralu | "Telugu wedding: include talambralu and the cloth coming down." |
| Tamil Hindu | Kasi yatrai, malai maatral, the oonjal swing, the thaali under gatti melam | "Tamil wedding: keep the oonjal and the women's songs." |
| Kannada Hindu | Varapooje on the eve, kashi yatre, the antarpata, dhaare | "Kannada wedding: must include the dhaare." |
| Kerala Hindu | A brief thali tying, garlands, the groom giving the bride a new garment, the sadya | "Kerala wedding: the ceremony is short, so give the sadya and family more room." |
| Kerala Christian | Church service, the minnu tied, the manthrakodi placed over the bride | "Syrian Christian: include the minnu and the manthrakodi." |
| Muslim, across the south | The nikah, family gatherings, often a reception | "Nikah first, then the reception; keep the vows audible." |

## What is a South Indian wedding video edit?

It is a short film cut from the footage of a wedding in one of the southern Indian traditions, or a mix of them. With WeddingEditor it is a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser, made by WeddingEditor's AI editing from your upload and your notes on which tradition it was and what mattered.

Not the same as: South Indian is not a single culture, language or religion. For a Telugu, Tamil, Kannada or Kerala wedding, the regional page goes further into its rituals.

## South Indian wedding editing questions

### Should I call it a South Indian wedding or name the region in my brief?

Name the region and community, for example "Tamil Iyer" or "Kerala Syrian Christian". WeddingEditor works from what you write, and a specific name with a plain description of each ritual helps far more than a broad label.

### The couple combined Tamil and Telugu customs. How do I brief that?

List every ritual in the order it happened, with one line on what it looks like, and say which side it came from if that matters to the couple. Mixed weddings are common, and the edit follows your list.

### A Kerala Hindu ceremony was very short. Is there enough for a highlight?

Often yes, because the events around it, the arrival, the family, the sadya, fill out the film. If you have very little footage, a Social Teaser project may fit better than a Highlight Reel.

### Can I choose a Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam song?

Not through WeddingEditor. It keeps the audio from your footage and balances music with it by your audio preference. Add a named, licensed song yourself after downloading if the couple asks for it.

### Does WeddingEditor decide what is appropriate to show from a temple or church?

No. Temples and churches set their own rules on filming, and the family decides what should be shown. Film within those limits and put any exclusions in the avoid question.

### What does a South Indian wedding edit cost?

One Wedding is $119 one-time for one wedding, or plan subscribers use one credit for the project. Up to two revision rounds are included with each full edit.
