# A maiyan highlight, turmeric, songs and all

The maiyan is the Punjabi turmeric ritual, usually held at home in the days before the wedding, separately for the bride and the groom. Married women of the family rub vatna, a paste of turmeric, flour and oil, on the bride's or groom's face, arms and feet while singing traditional songs, and it often ends in turmeric on everyone. Upload the maiyan as its own project, say whose hands and voices matter, and WeddingEditor's AI editing makes a Highlight Reel of about 5 minutes or a Social Teaser.

## How to get a highlight of the maiyan

1. **Create a maiyan project** Upload the files from the ritual, from the bride or groom sitting down until the last of the paste is washed off. If you shot both the bride's and the groom's maiyan, decide whether they share one project and one film or each get their own.
2. **Write down the people and the songs** WeddingEditor relies on your notes for who is who. Name the women applying the vatna, the relatives holding the cloth overhead if there was one, and the singers, and say whether the songs should carry the film or sit under it. List the moments to keep, such as the first touch of paste or the water pot ritual.
3. **Receive, watch, request changes** After paying or using a credit, start processing; it typically takes 24 to 72 hours. Your AI-made edit appears in the project as a 1080p MP4 to watch and download, with up to two revision rounds by email.

## Moments of the maiyan to list

- **Seated on the low stool**: The bride or groom seated on a low wooden stool, often under a red cloth or phulkari held at the corners by relatives.
- **The first vatna**: The first married woman, often the mother or grandmother, applying the paste to the face and hands.
- **Suhag and ghodiyan**: The women's songs: suhag at the bride's home, ghodiyan at the groom's, sung while the paste goes on.
- **Turmeric for everyone**: The moment the ritual turns into a playful fight, with cousins smearing paste on each other.
- **Ghara gharoli**: In many families the bhabhi brings a pot of water, often from a gurdwara, for the ritual bath, and receives a gift.
- **The bath**: Water poured over the bride or groom to wash the paste away, usually filmed from a respectful distance.

## What happens at the maiyan, in order

Families name and order these steps differently. Ask before the day, and mention any differences in your notes.

- **1. Two homes, two rituals**: The maiyan usually happens separately at the bride's and the groom's family homes, sometimes for several days in a row.
- **2. The vatna**: A paste of turmeric, gram or wheat flour and mustard oil is prepared and applied by married women of the family.
- **3. Songs and the cloth canopy**: Women sing traditional songs, and in many families four relatives hold a red cloth over the person being anointed.
- **4. Water and the bath**: The ritual ends with the ghara gharoli water pot, brought by the bhabhi in many families, and the turmeric being washed off.
- **Footage from every camera**: Upload clips from all your cameras into the project without renaming or sorting them; the AI editing works from the raw files.
- **Made by AI editing**: For this Punjabi maiyan film, every full edit is made by WeddingEditor's AI editing and delivered to your project.

## Parts of the maiyan and what to note in the preferences

| Part of the maiyan | What it looks or sounds like | What to note in the preferences |
|---|---|---|
| Setting up | Stool, red cloth, bowls of vatna | "A few seconds of the bowls being prepared." |
| Applying the vatna | Hands on the face, arms and feet, laughter | "Show each of the four women who applied it." |
| The songs | Women singing suhag or ghodiyan | "Keep one song clear and complete." |
| The turmeric fight | Cousins smearing each other, shrieks | "Twenty seconds of the fight, mostly the brothers." |
| Ghara gharoli and bath | A water pot carried in, water poured | "Include the bhabhi with the pot; keep the bath brief and modest." |

## What is the maiyan?

The maiyan is a Punjabi pre-wedding ritual in which married women of the family apply vatna, a turmeric paste, to the bride or groom while singing, as a blessing and a beauty ritual before the wedding.

Not the same as: It is similar to the haldi in many Hindu families from other regions and to the mayun in Pakistani families, but the songs, the water ritual and the names differ. It is not the mehndi, when henna is applied.

## Maiyan highlight questions

### Can the bride's and groom's maiyan be one film?

Yes. Upload both into one project and say in the notes which footage is from which home. If each should have its own highlight, use two projects, each with its own purchase or credit.

### Can I keep the bath out of the film?

Yes. Use the question about things to avoid, and the AI editing leaves it out. Many videographers keep only the water pot arriving and skip the bath itself.

### Will the women's songs be in the highlight?

If you recorded them, yes. WeddingEditor keeps your original sound and uses music alongside it, balanced by your audio preference; say in the audio question whether the songs should lead.

### The maiyan went on for three days. Can it all go in?

Yes. There is no limit on files in a project. List each day's key moments in order so the AI editing knows what to draw on.

### Can I finish the maiyan film myself?

Yes. Download the MP4 and bring it into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro for your own titles or color.

### Does WeddingEditor decide how much of the maiyan may appear?

No. How much of a private ritual is shown is a matter of family protocol. WeddingEditor's AI editing edits what you upload and follows your avoid notes, so upload only what the family has agreed to.
